Fish Rock Beach is amazing and was very attractive to rum runners during Prohibition. Today, visitors enjoy its private and pristine beach, which the Condé Nast Traveler rated as one of the ten best in the northwest. Services available in Anchor Bay include a small shopping enclave, a coffee house, great restaurants and romantic lodging, all nestled in the redwood cove. Anchor Bay offers relaxation, natural beauty and a peaceful, tranquil environment along Mendocino's scenic South Coast. F O R T R O S S Eleven magnificent miles up the coast from Jenner is this historic Russian Fort town and the Fort Ross State Historic Park. Enjoy tours, day-use areas, ocean access, an underwater park, and the Stanley S. Spyra Memorial Redwood Grove. G U A L A L A It's a name that's hard to pronounce and even harder to spell. The locals say "wa- LA-la." It's like a private retreat when you need to relax and have fun. Just imagine… you, the beach, the redwood trees, and a few whales playing off shore. And you'll love the people. They're peaceful and happy, and lucky for you, this state of being is infectious! You may even see a famous Gualala sunset… some say there's an exotic "green flash." In summer the river is a favorite for swimmers, sunbathers, picnickers, canoeists and kayakers. The majestic redwoods, firs, pines and deciduous trees lining the beaches provide cool shade for fishing pools and a myriad of wonderful surprises for nature lovers. However you choose to pronounce it, enjoy your stay in beautiful Gualala. T I M B E R C O V E This is one of the most pristine fishing spots along the Sonoma Coast and home to the Timber Cove Inn, Restaurant, Wedding and Event Center. Located 17 miles north of Jenner, Timber Cove has become a popular romantic getaway, as well as a fishing destination for abalone divers and coastal fishermen seeking a wild and spectacular setting. In winter fresh water creeks cascade down sheer cliffs into the cove's turbulent green waters. On the weekends abalone, salmon, Pacific Coast snapper, ling cod, rock cod, sea urchins, mussels and seaweed are sold at the boat landing. A R E N A C O V E & P O I N T A R E N A The mid-coast region of Mendocino is a land of scenic splendor. Coastal mountains lunge toward lush meadows which end at high coastal bluffs. Highway One is a ribbon of black through this land that seasoned travelers have called some of the most beautiful scenery on earth. The roadsides near Manchester are lined with huge callas in spring, and decorated with wild carrot and radish flowers in summer. Downtown Point Arena is home to some of the best restaurants on the Mendocino Coast, plus an organic community market, a great wine and brew bar with live music, the famed Arena Theater and Garcia River Casino for first rate entertainment, and adventure tours at B. Bryan Preserve where you can meet African zebra, giraffe and antelope up close and personal. The Point Arena Lighthouse and museum is the historic sentinel landmark receiving lots of press – the only Pacific West Coast lighthouse of significant height (115 feet) which you can climb to the top. The lighthouse hosts a kite flying festival on Independence Day weekend, and moonlight tours of the tower, featuring live entertainment and winetasting. A N N A P O L I S One of the most interesting drives in the South Coast region is along the tiny Annapolis Road in northwestern Sonoma County. This lazy 14-mile stretch winds along the ridgelines, dropping in and out of remote and beautiful coastal valleys. Along the way, visit the small family winery tucked on a sunny hilltop or the golden Buddhist Temple on Tin Barn Road. T H E S E A R A N C H A few miles south of Gualala you will find The Sea Ranch, a world famous vacation spot known for its unique blending of architecture with nature in a simple, beautiful environment. The Sea Ranch stretches along ten miles and 5,000 acres of spectacular coastline. Golf on a Scottish- style course with ocean views, walk along the cliffs overlooking the ocean, enjoy ocean and river fishing and clamming, visit the Sea Ranch Chapel, a one-of-a-kind creation of design and sculpture. In 1996 The Sea Ranch Golf Links was expanded to 18 holes and nominated for Golf Digest's "Best New Course of the Year" designation.
