Contact Kelly McKiever at kmckiever@yankeetrails.com hen asked about The Villag- es' Rotary Club, President Nancy Baker didn't hesitate for a second: "We're all about service and giving back to the communi- ty," said Baker. "Our main goal is to help people and make a lasting positive impact on their lives". Chartered in May of this year, The Rotary Club is among the newest clubs in The Villages. Although still new, the club has hit the ground running, signing up more than 30 members while pursuing several community focused initiatives in just a short few months. Among these initiatives is the Love Extension program, which focuses on delivering food and essentials to home-bound individuals. The club utilizes its regular meeting, which is every fourth Thursday at 5:00 p.m., to prepare the bags that are delivered to those that are unable to leave their homes. Additionally, The Rotary Club has been fundraising on behalf of the Bushnell Youth Center in an effort to give children addi- tional structure after school at a cost-effective rate for their par- ents. Recently, the group hosted a community-wide garage sale ben- efitting the Youth Center, encour- aging neighbors to de-clutter their homes while benefitting a worthy cause. "We want to be a volunteering club that still has fun," said Baker. "It's important that our members enjoy the time they're spending to benefit their community". To further their fundraising ef- forts, the club will be hosting a benefit concert on November 9th, the proceeds of which will go to a variety of local charities. Currently, The Villages' Rotary Club is collaborating with other Rotary Clubs throughout the state to pursue a clean water initiative for Puerto Rico. As the club is still new, initiatives are chosen by members.
