Working with The Villages, they started The Vil- lages Archery Club, which has now been around for nearly 15 years and has since expanded to about 300 members. Many members are beginners, but some take trips to competitions and are state or even national champions. One member, John Horwath has won national championships throughout three decades, during his 70's, 80's and 90's, and holds several titles. Charlie Campney, a six-year mem- ber and now secretary of the club, grew up shooting as a teenager, but stopped for many years until joining the club, which reintro- duced him to archery along with the opportunity to meet many new friends he may not have otherwise met. The Club offers a social aspect for its members with a common interest in archery. Campney says they now have dinners, socials and even holiday parties. The purpose of the Club is to shoot and have fun, but they also host up to 10 tournaments a year and work with different groups, including students, senior citizens and their grandchildren to teach them how to hold a bow, score, shoot, and practice safe shooting. The club works with middle school students each week as part of their extracur- ricular activities. The Club has never gone on a trip together until now. They've booked their first cruise for next February. Campney says it will not only be the first trip for the club, but the first cruise he and his wife have ever gone on. Members will cruise to the eastern Caribbean for one week, and though the planning is still in its early stages, they expect to sign up for some excursions throughout their time traveling.
